André Matos - Time to be free by Rafael Nery André Matos – Time to be free André Matos has been for such a long time between the best worldwide lead singers , no one need to introduce him due to his word since the beginning with Viper, crossing the huge and great trajectory with Angra and Shaman. It is curious, because these are the most popular band in Brazil market and they are between the most popular throughout all over the world. After deciding going for the solo career, besides counting on his old band mates now he can count with a new drummer and a second guitar player which the Idea can remind us the Angra times. The album intituled Time to be Free features two big names of the worldwide marketing who are Roy Z and Sascha Paeth. The album starts with one of the most remarkable characterist from André Matos’s style which is the influence of classical music due to his academic formation. Menuett prepares the mood like an overture of some Opera for the explosive Letting Go which brings all those characteristics from songs which opened his album such as fast riffs, usage of harmonic minor scale, remarkable melodies and a guitar solo totally influenced by Yngwie Malmsteen in his best moment, definitely a great choice for the style fans. The lyrics in my point of view, shows the idea that even if you have some problems along your life you have to get over and find your own way. Rio shows a curious effect in the beginning and guitar riffs very powerful which Remember Why has an exotic start with a nice rhythymc arrangement with the same motive while all the theme with harmony and melody develops themselves. How Long (Unleashed Away) is a song much simpler and goes right to the point which its bridge and chrous remind me the same mood of the unreleased track named Don’t Despair which belongs to the first Angra’s demo tape, maybe the biggest difference is the solos totally influenced by Randy Rhoads with a really heavy mood.
Looking Back shows a progressive start because of the guitar riff and the drums with the effect on the introduction followed by an acoustic which reminds us a lot the same writting process of the track For Tomorrow from Ritual ,definitely a band’s characteristic. The lyrics seems like a metaphor to all the issues with Shaman, mainlye for the phrase: “I thought you'd last forever, but like a star, you never would” , maybe it was purposed to create an ambiguity. Face The End brings a very beautiful arrangement of piano in its beginning followed by a voice melody which could only be written by André Matos. I think the name of the songs speaks for itself about the lyrics, the whole seems to be based on this concept as the track Time to be free which has an beautiful introduction with a very reflexive lyrics. This idea of talking about feelings and thoughts pleases me much more than if the lyrics talked about a trip to the never land or an epic battle, because from this kind of subject people can extract something for their lives. I have nothing against people who write this epical kind of lyrics, but I don’t think in this case would be the ideal for the album and the moment the band has been through. The introduction of Endeavour reminds me clearly Iron Maiden in the Powerslave time and follows with characteristics which has been explorer throught the whole André’s career like fast drums, remarkable melodies and really fast guitar riffs. Separate Ways (Words Apart) is a cover the famous song by Journey which was just published on the japanese version as a Bonus Track, there is a huge difference between the two version and this ends up being much more heavier than the original due to guitar arrangements and the remarkable interpretaton of André Matos.
