01- Hello Michael, how are you? I hope everything is fine with you!
Thank you so much for this inteview!First of all I would like to start
by knowing how you got interested with music
and who were your early bigger influences?
Elvis Presley when I was 8 years old.
When he died 1977 he suddenly was very present on TV again for a while
and I was old enough to be effected by him. He effected me big time.
From those days on I wanted to become a singer and musician.
02- Have you ever taken up vocal lessons?
Nope; I am an autodidact somehow.
03- When you were still pretty young you joined Helloween and
recorded the two legendary Keeper albums.
How did this opportunity come up since you lived the dream of several
heavy metal musicians being that young!?How did you face that?
They heard about me in Hamburg and Markus showed up in the rehearsal
room of my school band.
He said that they were looking for a singer and gave me the “Walls of
Jericho” album which I didn't like, so I never called him back.
But after a few weeks M.Weikath called me and said they want a singer
like me to move on artistically.
He talked me into getting to their rehearsal room, and as soon as we
started to play some of the main songs from the keepers that they
wrote with my voice in mind,
I was in love and excited and in the band. The time with Kai Hansen
was amazing, don't want to miss it. But also too soon over.
I never had a problem with success and stuff (if that's part of your
question); never believed in ''Stars''; that keeps you healthy in
heart and head.
04- After you left Helloween, you got focused on your solo career
which wasn't only Heavy Metal at all. How did you face
this change and who artists have been your influence during this
phase? In this case are you free to try new stuff on the records?
Even in my main metal days I was never only listening to metal.
My taste in music was always wide; I never understood certain
dogmatism and mind-limiting ideologies.
And now that I am not in a metal-band anymore, and also did that
quite enough, it is only right for me to just do what comes naturally
in terms of music.
I am always free; I cannot do anything else than what comes
naturally; even if I would try, I could design something for anyone
or any label ...
05- You recorded an album which featured Adrian Smith on the guitar,
how did this all happened?
Same management; I was looking for a guitarist and Adrian wasn't
doing much at that time.
So Rod Smallwood (Iron Maiden management) brought us together.
Adrian is a very sweet and easy going person. Gifted guitarist too.
06- Do you think that time is the only thing to make a musician to
grow up as an artist? How do you see this growth in your
own career?
Everything happens in time and space with us, isn't it?
So yes, it's time and experience that makes us grow.
Our age makes a big difference in how we see things and think or feel.
07- What's the biggest difference in your life now if compared to the
years of glory in Helloween's time?
I am totally different today; mentally and spiritually I have grown a
bit over the years.
Since I am 22 years I am studying philosophy, religions,
anthroposophy, nature science etc.
That always changes you. I can really recommend it!
08- You lastest release named "Past in different ways" brings acoustic
arrengements to your old Helloween songs. How this idea come up?
Since heavy metal fans tend to be conservator,
how they have received this album?
The idea came from Frontiers-Records. I wasn't so sure about it at
first, but now I am very happy that I did it.
I was able to see that even my music in Helloween was already very
much fitting me and I can fully stand for it up to this day.
In terms of how it was received: My friends in the world love it, and
of course my enemies hate it; the usual game.
I really don't care about music-popes, you know? I do what I want
anyway; the more they bark, the more!
It's my songs; so even if I would like to re-record them as tangos, I
can do that without having to get the permission of the metal-
police. ...
09- what was the feeling of singing these songs and record them
again? If you could "re-record" some past album, would you do that?
It was not always easy emotionally, but having done it now, I know it
helped me a lot to make even more peace with the past.
But this was a one-off, there won't be another one like this. Now
it's new music to do!
10- Since you have influenced a lot of singers, mainly at heavy metal
style. What are your tips for the singers who want
to succeed in this career?
Shape your personality morally with Gods help; that helps your
singing (and your everything!)
All that matters is soul and identity. Don't try to be what you’re not,
be yourself and in tune with God.
And sing as relaxed as you can. That's technically very important
especially live.
11- What are the plans for the future?
Writing and recording the next Kiske-Album and probably doing an AOR
project with a female singer.
I'm looking forward to that. So far the ideas of Frontiers were very
cool. I am glad they bring those onto me.
12- Michael , thank you so much for this Interview! I would ask you to
leave a message for the fans here in Brazil.
I do like the passion towards music that especially south Americans
tend to have.
Keep that up!
