TETRADS DERIVED FROM
HARMONIC MINOR SCALE

por Ivan Barasnevicius

Hello Guys ! In the last columns, we studied all possible chords derivated from natural minor and harmonic minor scales. This month, we will learn the chords derivated from melodic minor scale (also called jazz minor). There is something important to understand about this scale: the seventh degree (altered), is not useful for half-diminished chords. It´s common to use this scale over chords that has the following tensions : 9m/9+/11+ and 13m. As you can see, the example 1 shows the possible chords from melodic minor (Just like we mentioned last month, we will just talk about tetrads, since triads are already implicit in this way).
We should also mention that, in minor tones, all three scales and his chords works together: natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor. So, the musician should know every single chords derivated from this scales and its aplications. In the box below, it´s possible to see the differences between all three scales:

Natural minor/ harmonic minor/ melodic minor chords and scales

As an exercise, should be very interesting to build this scale table in all minor tones. This way, will be more easy for you to understand the relations between all scales and chords. In most times, these scales are not applied just like we can see in this table, and some of these chords showed here are not caractheristic from tonal music, being more used as passing chords, just like the VII degree from melodic minor scale. Some of this scales can also be used in other types of dominant chords, just like mixolidian 11+ or altered. We should also remember that, in a musical analysis, sometimes you can find different improvising possibilities for the same harmony. And, for a better understanding of the real use use of all these elements, we will need to study a few more things that that we will talk about in the next columns. Doubts? Suggestions? Comments?
