This month we are going to see some ways of changing already made phrases. We’ll share the alterations in results in-side and out-side. << example 1 >>
Notice that the phrase is being played upon Dm7. If we extract the notes from the melody to form a scale we’ll have a Dorian Mode starting from D: << example 2 >>
Do the alterations using intervals from other modes, like this: << example 3 >> Play the phrases resulted from the last example upon the same chord, doesn’t matter its construction: You can also play the transposed phrase, as in the example below: Use any interval to generate another melodic sequence, for example, triton above, 3minor below, 2minor below, 5# above and 4# above, as shown below:
You can play the phrase resulted from the last example ½ key above or below, 1 or 2 keys above or below, it doesn’t matter, the phrase can be played anywhere.
You can also use the interval sequence inverted, for example 4+ above, 5+ above, 2m below, 9b below. (opposite sequence from the suggested at the example 5) << example 7 >> (Dm7)
Try playing the phrases contrariwise, reading from the right to the left: Or, yet, upside-down: Try doing the alteration in these two last cases from the example 5: Altering the rhythmic: Finally, BE HAPPY! You have here some possibilities of alteration to the same already made phrase. In this only exercise we have created lots of phrases that sound different one from each other. Study all of them, let them as natural as you can in your hand so that at the time you are playing one of them just “appear” in your hand! And, don’t forget: SING EVERYTHING, ALWAYS!
