Technique + Phrasing

por André Viegas

Hi folks! I’m happy to begin the new year writing this column for the website. Hope to contribute to your musical growth with my licks and ideas.

This month’s lick involves sweep picking, string skipping and tapping. The key is F#m.

The lick begins with a F#m7 arpeggio, starting on the 9th fret on the 5th string. You can see the fingering and note location on the picture below. Notice the slide from the 9th to the 12th fret on the 1st string, using the index finger. Now we have a descendant pattern using string skipping and tapping. The pattern is repeated between the 1st  and the 3rd strings, and then from the 3rd and the 5th  strings, in octaves.
From the second line on the tab, we have the same F#m7 arpeggio, this time hammering E note on the 12th fret from the high E string with your little finger. Now we have a descendant pattern using an A7M arpeggio, tapping the high notes on each string. This pattern is also repeated in octaves, generating a “domino effect”. The lick ends with a bend on the 7 th fret on the 5th string, using your little finger.
My advice is that you study separately each pattern that the lick demands, and then put them all together bringing them down. Have fun!
Till next month.
