Check up : Marcos de Ros Wavebox

By André Viegas

This month we tested the Marcos De Ros Wavebox Distortion/Booster pedal.

Construction

The first thing that calls the attention is the looks – its orange color and personalized painting. The pedal is constructed on a metal chassis and features two metal footswitches, distortion and booster with leds that turn on when they’re activated. It features an input  jack on the right side and two output jacks on the left side (left/mono and right, respectively). Also on the left side is a 9vDC adaptor input. On the top part there are 4 knobs: Level, Tone, Dist. and L.Booster, as well as a ‘filter’ key. The 9v battery compartment is on bottom, which is finished with  texturized rubber.

The sound

Using the left/mono output  the pedal produces a tone which goes from Overdrive to a Hard Rock and even Metal distortions, depending on how you adjust it. The Level and Tone knobs feature optimum variation in all their extension. The Tone knob can bring the sound to a dark, closed tone as well as make it a bright, crisp tone. The Dist. control features good variation up to 3 hours and then becomes constant. The L.Booster control only works when your footswitch is activated and works well with the Distortion on or off, becoming an excellent booster for clean sound as well. The Filter switch  functions as a midrange attenuator and is recommended for heavier sounds.

Following Marcos De Ros’s recommendation I used the Right output at the front of the amp. This output was originally designed to be used as a line output with loudspeaker simulation. But when connected to the front of the amp it produced more body and punch, changing the original pedal sound radically. When I connected it to my soundcard the pedal featured enough gain for direct recording, but the tone featured excessively high frequencies – a common feature on distortion pedal line outputs.

The bottom line

Marcos De Ros’s Wavebox Distortion/Booster is a versatile, easy-to-use pedal. It can produce optimum tones using different guitars with different pickup configurations. The Booster is useful for the distorted pedal sound as well as for the  amplifier clean sound. The sound produced was consistent throughout the test.
