Luis Wasques - Behind the Sun

by Luis Wasques

“Behind the Sun” is the name of my second album and I can say that it was not that easy to bring it alive. If  “Highest Mounts”, the debut album, was made after a couple of  months, things were not the same with “Behind the Sun”. It took me almost a whole year to finish it. I believe that´s because I decided to take an extra care with songs structure and audio quality. I didn´t want to make a  poor and irresponsible record only because it was growing inside a home-studio. All that I wanted was something really good. The target was overtake the first album in all the ways. Here go the tracks:

Arriving – I must admit that I was not too proud of having an instrumental song for the opening act. Melodic metal bands use this kind of song in every single album, and I didn´t want to enjoy this boring club. This track is here for two reasons: First, this is NOT a melodic heavy metal album.Got ya! Second, it is an important introduction for the second track, which brings the Brazil´s colonization theme in its lyrics. “Arriving” makes your imagination flows and at the end you feel you are already inside the album.

Beyond the Ocean Winds – For this one I wanted to make something really strong and catchy, to throw the listener inside the album. The keyboards arrangements are everywhere and the beat is really fast at all. This is a nice track to start a gig and it´s one of my favorites too. It´s kind of hard to sing too.

Owners of the Universe – At the beginning of the project this track was going to name the record.  Near the release I decided for “Behind the Sun” instead. I really love the main guitar riff which gives strong and power to the song. It´s not my style at all, but it worked fine! The lyrics are about the “mama, I want to be god” human being disease.

The Yell of Freedom – This is a good track for a single. It has all the elements loved by rock DJ´s. Ok, that´s not so true if the DJ speaks English. The lyrics are about the musical industry doom called MP3. I never heard about a song with this theme, so that´s it: “The chains are broken and a brand new generation will rise….”  Watch out, this is not a punk rock song…..

Avalon – This is my gift to Arthur The King. The old dog exile. I never wanted to be a slave of overdrive guitars and all the distortion forever. This song was recorded with soft and clean guitars and sounds like an acoustic theme. You can play this with your friends on fishing or camping.

Behind the Sun – It´s my favorite song. It was the last one to be composed and I counted with some guests. My girlfriend gave me support to write the lyrics while my brother played the bass lines. The breath taking guitar solo was made by Rafael Nery, an old friend of mine, and a high skilled guitarist. The song warns about the non stopping  sucking of Earth´s natural resources. It’s warming so much that it seems that we’re only one step behind the Sun.

Stay with me – In this one I make a more discursive vocal line at the beginning. It´s a new composing style that I wanted to try, just to make something different. The lyrics are about personal experiences. Enjoy, ´cause this is very rare indeed.

Waiting for the Night – This is an old school rock´n roll and that´s it. I just wanted to bring back that kind of sound that turns people on, calling them to sing together when it´s played in a gig. Simple and pure energy.

Far Cry -  I wrote this song thinking about the state of violence here in Brazil. It´s a mid beaten track made to shake our feelings and to make us think about what´s happening nowadays.

Turned Page – This song was made a long time ago, only with voice and guitars. Now, I had the chance to work on it and improve it to a three parts song. I love the middle part when the guitar solo meets the keyboards line. The lyrics talk about personal experiences, again. But it´s a long, long history….

Endless Journey – Ok, this is the right song title for a final chapter, isn´t? The vocals arrangements had special care on this track. I tried to show some different techniques and a lot of unusual vocal applications. At the end of the song four vocal lines cross the air, sounding just a little like the chorus masters Queen and Savatage. They were my inspiration for this stuff. I´d never do that by myself heuhehe. Ok, and that´s it.
